To me, the birthday invitation is what sets the tone for the rest of the party. Because we live out of town, it's nice to be able to give our guests a map of directions to the party, and that opens me up to making custom invitations for every party.
I did the custom invitations at first because I was totally unimpressed with the selection of invitations at the store (and I checked Wal Mart, the dollar store, Target, etc.) I was active at the time on a mommy message board where some members were talented with digiscrapbooking, and as time went on I started to think that I could do it too - and do it in such a way to create print-quality invitations for my kids' birthdays.
It worked out really well. I typically spend about 2 hours making an invitation. My costs depend on what copy shop I use (Staples, etc.) and the quality of paper I choose to use for the invitations. Postage, of course, is above and beyond that - but with the rate that stamps are increasing in price I'm starting to think I'm going to hand deliver from now on!
Below you'll find samples of the invites that I have created so far. I have watermarked these, because the time I put into them is worthwhile - but please feel free to use them for inspiration!
